The relaxed atmosphere, friendly governor and the perfect sound level of the music made my short stay in here very pleasant.
The lounge like area with the fire blazing was an excellent touch. It was 3 quid a pint which seems pretty average for this area.
If I’m around this area again I will definitely try for a longer stay.
Excellent pub - beautifully kept Edwardian decor with real fire. Authentic feel - everything's brown - but that's how it was in the old days! Good beer and friendly bar staff as well.Good beer all round, and a fine building. Well worth a visit...

I’ve been into the Bell and Crown on many occasions since my last review and have to report that the staff’s attitude is now excellent and this is still the best venue in the area for a few jars. I wish that I lived more locally!Best pub in the the near-by area - well run, staff that can calculate and serve more than one drink at a time and nice location.

Don't sit outside on a full spring tide!!!Good pub on riverside with oak panelled interior and small patio. Despite serving a wide range of food, it has resisted the temptation to become a restaurant in all but name and is still very much a pub which welcomes those who just drop in just for a pint

I remember when this pub was managed by Fullers - it was neglected by the brewery. It has been revived and is now a kind of oasis beside the A4. They have a board outside which says 'Come over to the other side', which is their slightly spooky way of advertising the garden. The pub goes back to 1657, in the original building, and has a character barman who appears to have been there all that time! Beer's good, food good, dont want much more.nice pub good beer...
Limited but nice selection of well kept cask ales (Fullers), and some decent lagers. Popped in Tuesday afternoon, and found the ales very well kept, three on tap. My lager was nice and cold
This place had a lovely atmosphere when I went in on Friday night. The place was packed with the young, hip business crowd from the Hogarth Business Park, along with a crazy party of Sex Pistol freaks from God knows where. Just got new chefs, apparently, and is now doing food in the evening.

Great pub with great beer and great food, barstaff are extreamly freindly especially the new manager she seams to be injecting a new lease of life into this traditional old english pub.

90/10 toward food rather than beer and as beer is what this site is about it gets marked down slightly.
Fine to pop in for a pint with er indoors but inpossible to find a seat and would also feel awkward if you went there with the lads just in case the volume increased above a whisper.Very old pub, great building, wonderfully located on the river. It is a Chef & Brewer so the food is of a reasonable standard and they tend to look after the place quite well.

For the romantic, you would in many ways rather this was more of an old fashioned pub and less of a semi-restaurant. But the economics of it dictate that a valuable site like this needs to rake in food sales so there it is.Good choice of ales in an interesting and rambling old pub which seems to cater reasonably well for both drinkers and diners. It is in a great location for summer evenings but the proportion of tables with 'reserved' notices on them however is somewhat irritating.

By the way - why does BITE have continual pop ups now? Cut it out ladsDecent enough pub in a good location but looking a bit tired and, as the previous poster said, it could do with a sensitive overhaul (emphasis on sensitive - doesn't need tearing apart and turning into something it isn't).The least of the pubs in Strand on the Green, which is a shame because it could be a real corker. Really needs a sensitive overhaul, a bit of care and some enthusiasm from the staff.

Ahh, this picture does it no justice! What a fantastic pub! Beautiful decor and friendly atmosphere, great beers and tasty food. I have been in three times this week since first going in on Sunday for lunch (I had the lamb shank, YUM!)
As a chiswick resident I can positively say that this pub has totally turned around from the reputation it once had, to a pub I will definately be frequenting with my chums and am SO taking my Dad to see the live jazz on fathers day. Well done!I had to wait to be served as the lone barmaid was messing about with the coffee machine behind the bar. Whilst I waited I noted that there were lots of different lagers available along with Pride, Tim Taylor, Honeydew and Bombardier. When I was finally served the barmaid was friendly although she may have waited until she had given my change back to me before answering the ringing phone.

I had a butchers at the food menu and it seemed like proper down to earth pub food – Makes a change!

There is a covered area outside the pub to the rear and the front.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to drink here, but there are far worse in Chiswick.Noticed the revamped exterior and decided to call in to check it out as haven't been in for ages. Recently refurbed about 6 weeks ago. Very impressed with the new interior decor. Had just eaten elsewhere, but the packhorse has a good traditional pub menu (not usual gastro stuff you see everywhere now) Will definately visit again to try the food.
Service was okay, although had run out of sparkling mineral water. Was a quiet Sunday afternoon. Be interesting to see what it's like when busier.

I agree with the last review, not sure where the low rating came from. It was sunny day when i drank here recently, they had a guy playing some acoustic songs and it was packed outside. Good atmosphere, would certainly drink there again.I popped into the Barley Mow this lunchtime and had a quick pint of Fosters which came in at £3.10, so it has gone up 20p in two years. As far as I could see it is a free house with the usual lagers on offer along with Doombar. There were two other pumps, but their clips were turned around. The barmaid was a little dozy, but she was extremely friendly with it.

It’s a long pub with the bar running along one side of it. There is an entrance at both ends and one of the ends, not sure if it is the front or the back, has some covered seating. This area also has a BBQ and barrels of Pride and Budweiser. I’d imagine the extra “mini-bar” outside is for those hot and busy summer days.

I’m not entirely sure why this place has such a low rating. I certainly found it to be no different to the many other pubs along Chiswick high road and I certainly wouldn’t mind if I had to return.I agree with the point below, used to be a good pub when the pool tables were there, and had a good atmosphere in general. Thats all gone now1 :(
