Reviews by BITE users:

Nice dark wood bar, solid light wood tables, two-roomed pub with great ale selection and, apparently, ~140 bottled beers in the many fridges which wind around behind the bar. The ‘menu’ may not always be bang up to date but, from reading a tda review, the prices seemed fair, eg Rochefort8 £3.20. On handpump Oakham No Bully Dozer, JHB, Bishops Farewell, New-K-Ham Brewery Puffin, Bateman’s Salem Porter, Burton Bridge Festival, Sam Smiths OBB, Bees Amber Ale. Bar billiards table, soundtrack included Adagio for Strings followed by some cracking blues. Friendly, and beer friendly, barman who was happy to chat, great value Sun lunch suggested roasts (beef/pork/duck) at £6.95.

Up for sale at present, but hopefully the pub [lease?] will be taken on by someone as beer-knowledeable as the present owner. Belgian-influenced to the point of having a beer menu. Welcoming and friendly

Gorgeous young barman called Paul. Good selection of real ales... What more does a girl need from a pub?

Excellent pub with fine ales and good food, in a pleasant edge of city, rural setting.

ps. if you were less than impressed with the mention of Billy's pictorial adventures on his pumpclips, you have to bear in mind that he is a Jack Russell terrier...

A gem of a pub formed from converted farm buildings. Excellent range of beers led by the "in house" though brewed at Burton "Steaming Billy" range. My samples included the Country Bitter and Billy Bitter both of which were truly exceptional. Hope to go back before long.

Aimed at real ale enthusiasts this is a friendly venue serving quality beers. Went there for a friend's StagFest, as he lives in Bedford the fact he had his celebrations here says the Vaults must be doing things right.

Don't let the smell of wet dog as you enter put you off. Great selection of about a dozen handpumps very well served.
5 May 2008 18:10
I think the photo here has a ‘wine-bar’ look to it, but the interior is nothing like that. Wood floor, sturdy wood tables, chairs, benches, long-ish L-shaped bar offering 12 handpumps, all on and in good nick Sat pm. Beer emporium that may cater for rockers, I wasn’t that keen on some of the metal soundtrack, but it did at least vary. The barman (owner?) knew his stuff, chatted about beers, sold us some homemade pickles, perfect for the subsequent dash to Melton Mowbray – I hope he enjoyed the Thompson’s pie we brought back for him. Stapleford Full Mash (5.9%), Bees Navigator, Acorn Chinook IPA, Oakham JHB, No Bully Dozer, Bishops Farewell, Doc Mortons Brainwash, Abbeydale Matins, Leeds Old Accomplice, Beowulf Dragon Smoke, Holdens Night Train, Loddon Wowzer. Impressive line-up.

Called here on arrival in Leicester to find a clean and bright establishment. Decent Sunchaser, spotted the piano mentioned by trainman, noticed they charge £5 to use the toilets [non-customers of course!]

First pub on Saturday - Everards house, near station. Tiger, Beacon, Sunchaser, Original, & ‘Gaffers Gold’ (later seen elsewhere as Janet’s Gaffers Gold?), Everards beers in very good condition. Leather sofas look out of place at front of pub but further to the right & rear the furniture becomes more traditional, continuous single bar winds round the whole, but in front/centre/rear sections. Piano (‘do not play’) centre rt, bar football table to the rear. Pumpclips on wall suggest a rotating guest. Was closed when we returned for a pre-train beer ystdy but the landlady took the trouble to come out to explain that they were taking a breather, having been open since 07:00(!) serving Leic fans prior to the crucial (unsuccessful) relegation match at Stoke. Bad luck to the Foxes, a reprieve to GDS.

Enthusiastic landlady, keen to promote pub and real ale - should be supported

**Real ale newsflash** Thursday 17th - Sunday 20th July; Booze and Blues beer festival - thirty plus (scottish) brews and five ciders accompanied by live music... I attended their first bash and it was an amazing showing. Get bums down here and support this brilliant pub!

Ideally situated near the train station and the new "Curve" theatre when it opens in Sept (for pre and post theatre drinks!) Large traditional style pub. I hadn't been here for over ten years, so decided to revisit recently. The place was busy, so word appears to have got around about the new ownership. Lots of choice of ales plus Samuel Smiths lager and draught cider.
29 Apr 2008 23:09
Now this is developing into a little gem. Five new beers every Friday, all from micros, many from disparate regions. All beers excellently kept. Tasters available. Will be numerous fests and as it's only two minutes from the station is actually a good stop off. It will be revamped and the outside has a lick of paint already. The LL is looking to get hold of FH I think.
Keep visiting, it is only if it is used that It will become the venue I know it can be

When living in Leicester a couple of years ago, never went in this place as it a) looks like a cross between a prison and a public urinal and b) looks like you might get stabbed. However went in as part of a crawl and it has a great range of well served beers. If you like top ales, dont let the look put you off.

Agree that the building promises little from the outside and the front bar is equally basic and boxy with a large area to left for the dartboard (£5 refundable deposit on 2 good sets darts), very studenty vibe. The rear bar is much more pubby with some dark wood & booth seating. Regardless, it is certainly a beer pub, with barrels replaced within minutes of running out. Slaters Top Totty & Premium, Oakham Bishops Farewell, Spire Dark Side of The Moon (mild), Rugby Web Ellis & 1823 (mild), Sadlers Worcester Sorcerer, Old Rosie.
5 May 2008 12:38
From the outside this pub doesn’t promise very much but inside it is usually a hive of activity and very popular. A couple of Saturdays back there were people dancing spontaneously in one bar while in the other I and a few friends enjoyed well-kept ales and a pizza to soak them all up. I only manage to get here once a year and I always look forward to my visits.

Reviews by BITE users:

Top class beer in a friendly pub at a more than reasonable price. It wouldn't work in Islington and neither would I.
The interior of the bar should photographed and recorded before this style of boozer is just a short memory.

Discovered by accident whilst walking from Richard III to Out of the Vaults I was happy to find a spacious pub selling Old Tom Mild. I had only had an Oakwell beer once before in the Foresters Inn, Nottingham so was pleased to find it here. At under £1.50 a pint the beer is cheap and cheerful, nothing wrong with that.
23 Jun 2008 12:19
A gem of a pub by the ring road. Probably dates from the late fifties or early sixties, and it doesn’t appear to have been mucked about with architecturally. It was busy on the Saturday early evening session a couple of weeks back and not surprising, given the friendly atmosphere, interesting clientele and welcoming staff. Oh, and a pint of well-kept ale could be had for the princely sum of £1.45. How do they do it?

Used to visit the Globe when living in Leicester a couple of years ago. A great traditional town pub owned by Everards and still serving a great pint. Long may it remain unchanged.
5 May 2008 17:27
Nice, large, multi-sectioned, original pub with mix of dark wood, red brick, & stone-slabbed floors, equal cross-mix of clientele. Snug to right of entrance, narrow area to the front/left of large central bar, note the round stained glass lead-light window depicting ‘victory’ between the right and rear bar sections. Everards Tiger, Beacon, Sunchaser, Janet’s Gaffers Gold, Burton Bridge Sovereign, Fullers Chiswick(?). Rather irritating that they felt the need to suggest it ‘illegal’ for us to have marker coins on the table for our friendly game of b’strd brag, even if they did give us a box of matches to replace.
5 May 2008 12:57
Best city center pub we have been in in years.
Full range of Everards beers plus guest, all in good condition.
Even the wife liked the beer. Will be coming back to this one again soon!
Food looked good but had already eaten so did not try, maybe next visit.

Enjoyed good pints of Hobbs Bitter and Brigadier. The atmosphere debate below is probably one of personal taste as much as anything. The pub has high ceilings and is not a "cozy boozer" but a decent town pub and extremely god beers looked after by an enthusiastic landlord.
5 May 2008 17:36
What are all these reviewers looking for with their comments about ‘atmosphere’? I found the welcome friendly & down to earth from the locals and the knowlegeable, beer enthusiastic guv. The pub has a simple interior with L-shaped bar serving two rooms, nothing wrong with that, or the local feel of the place. Hoskins beers, EXS (5%), Brigadier, Hob Bitter, Mild, Navigation Ale (7%), Tollgate TGB, Ale Wagon Traditional Cyder (8%). I nearly missed this place due to its artificially low rating on these pages, but I’m glad we caught a few well-conditioned beers here before heading off to the train.

It's a pub on my circuit in Leicester. I'm a ticker so only an occasional tick here for me. They do regular fests but for a reason only known to themselves they fail to advertise them. Guys people will come if you let them know! The beer is well kept. If you like to drink in oppressive victorian dad style silence this will be your bag. The Hoskins lads keep threatening to brew. I think i'll open a brewery before they get around to it.
Worth a visit on a beer fest. Look on scoopgen if you want that info

Reviews by BITE users:

Spent a very jolly saturday night in here on my first trip to see the sights of Leicester. Loved this pub. Two good guest ales on pump and a good selection of continental beers on tap and bottled, food was good and the cocktails were good too (if you fancy that sort of thing). One of the things that really struck em was how friendly and good the bar staff were - every time i was being served at the bar (no matter how busy it seemed to be) I was asked by another member of the bar staff if I was being served. They were fast and knew their jobs well, really can make a difference. I was there during summer holidays and it struck me as he kind of place that students would flock to in term time, but I can't say that'd be a bad thing as this seems like a pub where the atmosphere just gets better the more people are in it.

Popped in here last weekend - had a nice pint of GL draught cider and a bottle of Addlestones. Food was adequate pub grub. Nice atmosphere (although bouncers on the door even at lunchtimes), friendly staff, not a bad place at all.

Great venue for gigs. (Much better than the Charlotte). No real ale, of course. Big room downstairs, and smaller room upstairs.

Reviews by BITE users:

Down to earth local pub with good selection of ales, front bar has tables of varying sizes and a certain feel that it is missing a dartboard (a couple of us said that, strange), carpetted rear bar has the feel of a snug but houses a huge plasma. Surprisingly large live music schedule for a relatively small place. Nice to hear the friendly barmaid admit to being unsure about one of the beers only because ‘I haven’t tried that one yet’. Old Rosie, Everards Tiger, Sunchaser, Beacon, Acorn Sovereign, Tring Jenny’s Yarn, Burton Bridge Sovereign Gold.
5 May 2008 11:21
Excellent pint of Okells IPA. Has some character, one of those where you think what is this place on entry. modernisation would probably spoil it though.
11 Feb 2008 17:10
Excellent pub with brilliant beer, fantastic staff, great entertainment and friendly customers. Well worth visiting!

Looking for a quick pint and bite to eat, popped in here earlier this week. Quick and friendly service and food was fine. Usual JDW format and good prices.
12 Apr 2008 22:15
Recently seemed to have improved service standards and guest beer range. Not in the top league of 'Spoons but adequate for our weekly visit. As with others in this chain doesn't seem enough staff when busy.
11 Feb 2008 17:18
Called in for breakfast prior to going to beer fetivals at the Vaults, Criterion and Ale Wagon. Ordered 2 breakfasts and had 2 halves of beer. Checked receipt and found the wrong table number had been entered so back to the bar to have it corrected. Long wait for breakfast, lad was looking for the wrong table number! When the plates came, one had no hash browns and the other no mushrooms. Had a laugh with the folks on the next table as they were having similar problems. He took the meals away, and returned with one plate, the one without the mushrooms. Told him again there were no mushrooms, and it went away again. We were finally served with 2 breakfasts that by now were nearlly cold. Not one I would aim for again.
