Best Pub in Liverpool BAR NONE.
Great Beer, Great Food, Great Staff.
Carl the Manager was really helpful and went out of his way to make sure we were looked after.
I had a pint of Garys Festival Special which im led to believe was a brew made by the managers brother, his pic is even on the clip.
excellent pub with sperb beer, food & staff.
WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?

Stan Shaw should be knighted! I've never had a bad pint in The Baltic Fleet. I prefer the stout, porter and mild while my lad prefers the lighter ales, but whatever the beer, the genius of Stan shines through.
The young bar staff are very friendly and helpful. Assistant manager Trevor Williams is a great bloke.
As for the toilets, the management are installing new ones and even better news is the Wapping Brewery is due to increase its output.

This place is a gem..! It's always one of the first on our list for our regular Liverpool pub-crawl. Wapping beer is hard to beat, although it didn't suit one of our group, and the food is always well-cooked and very reasonably priced. (Mind you, any comparison with London prices will look good..!) Really nice people serving, one barmaid with multi-coloured hair certainly added something to the ambience..! Must try an evening visit sometime... sounds like it could be lively..! Great pub... should be preserved for the nation..! Now off to "The Cracke"...

Reviews by BITE users:

Good range of beers but not many ales from down south and not enough stouts and porters. But they have had Sharps Cornish Coaster the last couple of times I've been there which was well kept. Other ales I've tried there haven't been well kept! Worth a visit though.

Stunning selection of beers, this place is well worth a visit. Friendly bar staff, lively atmosphere & a good range of food. I only stayed for 1 drink but will certainly be back again to try some of the interesting drinks on offer. I can recommend the chocolate stout.
3 Aug 2008 11:26
Great range of great beers, from fantastic breweries. I had a couple of different pints, both of which were very tired and way past their best. It seems there are just too many beers on at one time. A real shame as half the amount of beers could be twice as fresh. Still, there was a great atmosphere and I'd go back.

The Gents has a screen to stop splashback from the urinal. This gives me as much pleasure as the ornate glass dome.
10 Jun 2008 12:57
Beautiful old pub, worth a visit just to see the interior and always seems to have a decent pint available. A must visit for us each time we visit Liverpool and really handy for Moorfields station. Excellent.
2 Jun 2008 18:24
Oops,it would seem that I have hit a raw nerve with Wirral-Realalian. Yes, I do work there, it's hardly a state secret. No has complained to myself or any other staff memeber about the temperature of our beers, if they were to do so we would do our utmost to rectify any short-fallings there and then, rather that wait for anonymity of web-page to make sweeping generalisations.

I go here several times a week and love it. Had a great pint of Cains FA yesterday served by a lovely friendly bar maid! Just hope it doesn't close down now that Cains have gone into administration!
10 Aug 2008 16:51
Friendly welcome in this busy pub, which has a good range of Cains ales. Well worth a visit.
3 Aug 2008 21:26
This is a great pub with a wide choice of Cains beers. I suggest have several half pints so that you can try a little of everything before you are in no state to remember what you've had! Fabulous tiled interior & nice relaxed atmosphere.

Reviews by BITE users:

oh yes, i almost hit it off with a with beautiful, fuzzy-haired art student, liz thompson, who worked behind the bar for a while. but that came later, and sadly we were moving in slightly different directions, vibewise. a real shame. dingy lights, bare floorboards, tatty seats, it was a top watering hole and i did some really good-quality thinking in there. enjoy
12 Aug 2008 14:28
this place really used to rock. fantastic jukebox, great scruffball crowd. used to go in there as a student of architecture and loved it all the time. met a terrific german woman called babs there once - must have been 1988-89 - and it's the first and only one-night stand i've had. she was cool and we stayed friends for a while after. i miss the old place terribly. cheers

To the pubinspectors - as the person who gave this pub its 25th rating (thus causing it to appear in the Top 10) might I suggest a little closer inspection? Two recent negative comments from the same person, yes, but if you go back further you'll find alot more good reviews than bad ones. Perhaps it's just not as good as it used to be?

For the record, I gave it a seven as the jukebox is indeed quality and it had a great collection of strong Belgian beers (one was 12%!) which I was too scared to try. Equally can't comment on the state of Wobbly Bob!

I don't think it's the sixth best pub in Liverpool, let alone the country, and you can twist statistics and ratings to suit your needs all day long. Fair play though, for not giving it a zero just because it appears not to belong in the hallowed top 10 (as often happens...)

what an absolutely superb boozer. Well kept ales, magnificent array of continental beers and very spacious. Excellent - I know i'll be back.
28 Jun 2008 22:24
Fantastic looking pub, with very good beer and friendly bar staff.
16 Apr 2008 11:34
Lets here it for the real pub landlord, Dominic. You always get a great beer here. Period. In over five years of visiting I have yet to have a 'bad pint'. Definitely sets the standard that other pubs, real ale servers or not, should aspire to. All hail to the ale, glasses to the bar please!

Whenever I have been here it's been crowded and it takes ages to get served. Several real ales at reasonable prices but be prepared to stand!
10 Aug 2008 15:55
a must visit, when on tour to lverpool, simply for the interior.

havnt tried the food, but beer was nice enough.
11 Jul 2008 17:15
beer's not as good as the Loaf but what an interior - easily the grandest pub I've ever been in. Take that Wetherspoons! Even with the after-work crowd in attendance there was plenty of space, I would reccommend coming here just for the spectacular decor!

Reviews by BITE users:

I wanted to love this place and I have to say that the building itself is great. However; the garden is overgrown and the beer was decidedly dodgy, I tried both. We had to wait to get served while the girl finished her fag out the front.
I imagine it could be a cracker, hopefully we just hit it on an off day.
2 Jun 2008 17:56
Atmospheric, basic, thatched pub with concrete floor, open fire, corner bar under the staircase and timbers of the original cruck building in evidence, all in one small room (2 other rooms, 1 with dart board and picnic tables outside). Once walked in to find five or six of the regulars eating cheese and biscuits and pickles round the table watching the football on a tiny screen above the alcove next to the fire. I thought we'd walked into a farm kitchen. Changing guest real ale. A one off.

Love this pub,it has a special meaning for me as I first met my partner there. If your going to pass this pub drop in on the way.

This is a very interesting place. Yes needs money spending on it but has great atmosphere, beer and well worth the trip.
4 Jun 2008 14:58
If you're in Liverpool don't be "cruel" on yourself and make a special trip as it is STILL shut!!
21 May 2008 13:56
If you are crueling Liverpool try a trip on the ferry to Birkenhead. Once you get past the dated decor this is a place to visit. Recommened every time.

Tucked away down a side street this is a lovely traditional boozer. Great value for money with house trebles of vodka or whisky at £1.60. I have to say I resisted temptation! Cains Mild was off but they substituted it for a Guiness at the same price. Relaxed atmosphere mainly full of older clientèle its well woth a visit.
3 Aug 2008 11:12
There is only one thing I can say about this great pub, IT'S THE BEST PUB IN THE WORLD!!! Very friendly people, barmaid and excellent beer!! What more can i say!!!

Nice traditional pub. A bit too cramped for my liking though, but the real ale on offer was good.
10 Aug 2008 17:22
Another fine, but smallish traditional Liverpool pub in a side street a couple of blocks away from the Philharmonic.

The Roscoe Head has been in every edition of CAMRA's GBG to date and I enjoyed a reasonable pint of Jennings in here last Friday lunchtime - 27 June 2008. There's 3-4 real ales on in total.

Perhaps unusually for Liverpool, there are several side rooms off a central drinking lobby ( rather similar in layout to Manchester pubs such as The Hare and Hounds on Shudehill )

The pub offers good honest lunchtime pub grub ( eg - steak and kidney pie, chips, peas and gravy for £ 4.75p ) . None of this poncey gastro food nonsense here !

The pub is named after William Roscoe, a famous anti-slave trade campaigner in the 1780's.

Read more about the pub in the Liverpool Historic Pub Guide, which is well worth getting hold of.

Visit recommended - try and make time to do this one if you can.

This city is the city of culture 2008. try its name sake beer you can see why.
13 May 2008 19:51
I think I saw that gangster that wanted to blow away Stevie G in here. He had his arm's around an assortment of Liverpool's finest ladies. I was more scared of his harem then of him.

The barstaff were very friendly and most of them spoke in pidgeon english which I found easier to understand than the scouser accent.

Reviews by BITE users:

Small traditional pub in the heart of the City Centre situated close to the entrance to the Clayton Street shopping mall.

There is one small bar at the front which leads to a quieter room at the back.

There is much wood-pannelling and stained glass to admire. However, the main distinctive feature is the sloping floor which slopes down quite noticeably to the back of the front bar from the bar area at the front - indeed the pub advertises itself outside as " the pub with the famous sloping floor"

Note the globe high up on the facade of the building, indicating that the pub dates back to 1888.

It's badged as a Robert Cain's & Co's house, but serves guest beers also - on my recent visit, these included Deuchars IPA and Black Sheep.

Well worth seeking out, but be aware that this is one of the smaller pubs in Liverpool and that you'll probably have to stand.
18 Apr 2008 13:21
Nice little basic pub usually has a few well kept real ales. Standing room near the doors, long bar on one side with seating opposite and at the far end then on further into a little room at the back. Nice enough decor with some original ceiling features and articles and pictures about old Liverpool sites and people.
26 Mar 2008 23:03
One of Liverpool's little gems, this place. Beer is always well-kept. The place is very old-fashioned, in a way that seems to be just left over from the first time round, rather than re-done to look old, if you know what I mean, but I don't see that as a problem. The only problem I have with it is that it is pretty small and snug so if there are more than half a dozen of you you struggle to be able to sit or stand in a group.

Think the front bar, which is more atmospheric, should be open again now. Excellent food place, serves delicious food all day from a decent and varied menu, with good service too. Easily the best pub for food on this side of town.
17 Jun 2008 23:10
On our visit, the front bar is being done up, so we could only go in the back, which is a little drab. The beer is good though and the service happy and smiling with a decent choice. I hadn't been in here before, but will visit again, hopefully when the front is re opened.
2 Jun 2008 18:19
Landlady reckons Real Ale " Costs them money" so won't give out a taster glass. " You wouldn't go into Tesco and ask to taste something" (I have on the deli counter) And she says "No other pubs do round here except the Ship & Mitre" I named four other pubs within yards that do. " It's company policy not to give tasters" ( I'll be checking with Okells) The only taster had been requested by the ONE of us out of four who don't drink real ale so he ended up with his usual bottle of p*ss with a lime in the top. ( He enjoyed the pint of Cains he drank after they gave him a taster in Dr Duncans!). Not her fault that the kitchens were shut that night for refurbishment and we could'nt eat there and the food is normally great but I've spent a lot of money in there over the years and won't be going back because of her attitude. Shame really!

Good place to go and the interior is very unique. Toilets are horrible! Nice little courtyard at the front with tables and benches. Quiet in the afternoon. Busy in the evening. Beer is cheap and always special offers. However, I was short changed twice by the same barman the last time I was there so check your change!
10 Aug 2008 17:17
Great atmosphere in this one and some good LIVE music. Last visit the real ale was suffering, there was only one on and that was poor.
13 Mar 2008 14:19
Always visit the Pilgrim during Beatleweek, and have a good time. Beer excellent, the all day breakfast has to be eaten to be believed, bar staff very friendly, and efficient, try it, you wont be disappointed.
