Walked out without a drink last week as Barmaid served 2 females out of turn and when challenged argued about it instead of apologising. It's always a shame when an otherwise great place is let down by poor service. dropping my rating by 2

losing out to the Hyde nowadays, and I'm not surprised

Probably when all considered the best pub in Winchester. It is not a place for food range, because its a proper pub it focuses on beer and environs. it is large, friendly and has a good ale range - fire place, random hangings and objects - while a way some hours here is easy. Can get busy but usually large enough to cope.
The owner i believe also operates the Black Rat (michelin star restaurant) and Black Bottle (wine bar).

Haven't been here for many years and it hits you the moment you enter that in you're in for a treat. Many different rooms with their own atmosphere and a good range of trad. beers, 5 or 6 I think including a stout from Cheriton Brewery. An absolute must for a visit and if you're coming by train it's a 20 minute walk or so from the station but a delightful one through the historic city centre

fantastic pub - good beers, great interiors, fantastic staff, good bar food. A true original.
